My favorite song from the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti has to be look and laugh because it seem so introspective about all he was fighting for and how much has not changed that even decades after his passage to the great beyond many things feel the same. Look and learn is the only career advise I also got when I joined my final paid employment 19years ago, my senior colleague at the time Ken Ochieze told me his own superior at the firm Mike Oghalu or Sam Osuala told him and I paraphrase, He said “Mike (referring to me now) I hope as you are looking you are learning”. Yeah I know right it seems so pedestrian and so un-emotive but yet that changed my life literally. I look and learn I don’t need you to ever teach me really just let me see you do it and then I will find a way to do it too.

I looked and learned so much that in just nine months being with that firm I moved on and started the trajectory I have been on the last 17 years, I looked and learned so much that though I was hired as a technical staff I requested to be allowed to sell and did my first 10,000USD deal in just 4 months and some who have been there for over one year with sole designation as sales officers sold nothing in the same time frame. I looked so much that I would sneak into our director’s office take some of his technical books and read them when everyone else has gone home or work on the software labs in the evening while everyone else was home. I threw my heart into learning all I saw at that organization and while my peers complained about remuneration I was only concerned with how we could we become number one in the market segment we were handed by the boss.

Look and learn became a personal mantra for me, because it has been the way I have moved up the ladder in my work, I am always interested, I am always engaged I want to learn and beyond learning find how that learning could make me and our team better. I am giving you the same gift Kennedy gave me 19 years ago, I don’t know what you need to do with it, maybe you need to sell something with it or be more creative with it or literally improve your thirst for knowledge with it and here you have it ” I HOPE AS YOU ARE LOOKING YOU ARE LEARNING “.
